Raised in a conservative Bay Area household, Chris Mann moves to the city with a set of intentions in direct contrast to those of gay migrants in the 1970s. Yet no sooner does he start his first year in law school then gay politics confronts him at every turn. His classmate and occasional lover, Wendy, regales him with her work on Harvey Milk's campaign against the anti-gay Briggs Initiative. His best friend, Jim - whose fiancé is a witness to the City Hall killings and plans to testify in favor of Dan White - enlists Chris to accompany him to White's murder trial.
Carried by the current of events, Chris struggles with his growing attraction to Jim and finally acts on his passion, facing violent consequences when Jim's fiancé finds the two men in bed together after the White Night Riots.

An interesting twist on the coming out genre the novel might be called a "retro" romance because of the historical setting, but it is hardly a typical gay romance. It goes well beyond boy meets boy, leaves girl and lives happily ever after. Rather it speaks to the intersections of life, personal decisions, historical events and what comes after. Briefly, law students in San Francisco become enmeshed in the politics and historical events of the city at the time of the assassination of Harvey Milk and trial of Dan White. By and large the characters are sympathetic and believable, the focus is maintained on them rather than the historical events and actors and explores how their lives are affected by the historical events playing out around them. An excellent first novel.Product details

The Trials of Christopher Mann edition by Casey Charles Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Mr. Charles weaves a knowledgeable and sensitive literary tale of the factual events in the politico/gay communities of late 70s San Francisco, of the emotional connections and traumas of the main characters, and of the personal awareness and personal acceptance we all must face. Charles portrays love in all honesty. My heart raced in three sittings as I read through this book, living it with Christopher Mann. Charles knows history, he knows law, he knows language, he knows his characters. He is a masterful writer. A must-read for our contemporary milieu!!
This insightful, wonderful novel brought back many great as well as painful memories for me. I lived in San Francisco during the time of the events of this story and actually worked on the "No On 6" campaign with Harvey Milk. Mr. Charles took me back through this time with his passionate as well as accurate rendition of these events exactly as they occurred. This book is a must read for anyone interested in this part of LGBT history which continues to influence our country and the world today.
Passionate and engaging storytelling about an extremely politically tumultuous time in the history of San Francisco. Charles tells of the struggles of several believable characters who come of age in the city during the assassination of Harvey Milk and George Moscone. He masterfully weaves his own struggles with sexuality with his interactions with a very tight group of friends who are tied together through their interwoven past lives. The focus remains on the characters during this scathing political climate. I haven't raced through a book this fast in recent memory. Exceptional!
Wow. The reviewer above hit the nail on the head. I read Charles's novel in a day-and-a-half when I holed up at home a couple weekends ago avoiding bad weather. We get so close to all the different characters, especially Christopher Mann, who struggles with his sexuality, his professional future, his family, his friendships. This is a coming-of-age novel in multiple ways--an intimate one (for the main character) and a societal one (San Francisco coming of age in the 1970s). I enjoyed Sean Penn as Harvey Milk in the Gus Van Sant film a few years ago, but that film glorified Milk. Charles doesn't do that. He takes all the characters, both real and imagined, and explores them thoroughly, taking into account the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is an important novel by someone who clearly understands narrative art, the law, and what it means to grow up confused in a confusing climate. Charles is compassionate, wise, and a magnetic storyteller.
It has been a long time since I got a book and devoured it in less than 48 hours. This past Memorial Day, I had my nose in The Trial of Christopher Mann nearly constantly and was gratified to be transported to San Francisco in the late 70's and to enter the scene from the experience of some engaging characters who opened up my understanding of legal concerns connected to the death of Harvey Milk and the trial of Dan White. This seminal piece of LGBTQ history was brought to life by Casey Charles' unique entry point through complex characters whose passions for the law, for justice, and for each other provided interest and engagement that kept me moving right up to the late night ocean front ending. Mr. Charles has an excellent use of language and description in the book which takes the pleasure of reading beyond the plot, history or legal understanding and creates a moving and delightful reading experience.
There must be a plot in there somewhere, but it's hidden in the unnecessary details. Maybe the story was more compelling 25 years ago.
Great read. Captures S.F. during the late 1970's.
