Idaho game warden, Charlie Cove, is back. He’s strapped with post-traumatic stress from events chronicled in the debut novel, Five Fingers.

Cove is called to an accident scene by a small-town sheriff to help investigate a morbid discovery. In the meantime, Charlie is perplexed by a different problem–dead fish. The sheriff keeps trying to drag him into what he has assumed is a homicide, while Cove struggles to solve his own mystery. And all the while, a demoniacal antagonist dances in the shadows.

The riveting tale of Seven Dead Fish, as seen through Cove’s Native American background, leaves you walking a tightrope between the innocence of nature and the evil of humanity.

Seven Dead Fish, the sequel to the authors first book titled Five Fingers, features Charley Cove, a half-breed game warden living and working in Idaho. Charley is suffering from PTSD from a previous tragedy where he may or may not have killed another man. He is experiencing another bout of night terrors when awakened by a deputy sheriff to help in the investigation of a truck crash where one man is found injured and nearby a severed foot in a boot is discovered.

At about the same time Charley is baffled about what is killing fish in a nearby stream. Are these two events related or not? The author has written an outstanding outdoor police procedural with a most likable protagonist and it is obvious the author has had a great deal of expertise as a game warden himself. While pursing the mystery of the dead fish Charley is constantly pulled back into the helping pursue the dilemma of the severed foot. In addition to the intriguing plot line the description of the landscape and the forensic methodology of the game warden are outstanding. This book is outstanding and I l look forward with great anticipation to going back and reading the prequel!

A good read, interesting plot, hope for more from Charlie Cove. Thanks Tony....
Once again a very good book from Tony Latham! I have read them all, and look forward to another. I was beginning to have concerns about Cove, the main character, in his seemingly inability to keep a relationship. It was good to see a happy ending for him!

Tony's real life experiences in law enforcement brings a realism to his writing.
Like "Five Fingers", "Seven Dead Fish" stirs some old emotions. Like most game wardens, Cove knows the wildlife entrusted to him and the community he lives in. And like most game wardens, Cove is passionate about both. Unfortunately, there are those who want to marginalize wildlife crimes and those who investigate them. Tony knows about what he writes and the struggles a game warden like Cove faces in a rural small community. Fortunately, our local game warden here is found to be secure to know his strengths as an investigator and gain the trust of the people that most matters and brush off the attacks of those who are nothing more than jealous of his character.
"Seven Dead Fish" is spot on. There is nothing written that is over the top or that is not happening out there in the wild. Maybe not all once, all the time to every game warden, but this stuff is going on.
I thoroughly enjoy reading Tony's works. He keeps me turning pages, guessing the outcome and never knowing until I'm there. Well written, interesting characters and unpredictable stories. Although I live in the country he speaks of I'm always intrigued to see what he'll create within these surroundings. Believable fictional mysteries with curious twists to the plot and circumstances most people wouldn't dream of. Keep them coming!
As a journalist and as a reader, I have often been disappointed when I've read accounts--fiction and nonfiction--about which I know something in real life. Too often, the writer's ignorance shines through despite research or is blindingly apparent that there hasn't been much. Not the case with Tony Latham's work. He knows of what he speaks, and his protagonist, Charlie Cove, knows of what he is about. Some amazing country is out there, and some bad, bad people do threaten it. Seven Dead Fish brings both to life, and does it while keeping you flipping the pages as quickly as possible to see just what happens next. Thank you, Tony. I'm waiting for whatever numerical adventure Charlie has next.
Tony Latham's writing just keeps getting better and better. His first autobiographical story, Trafficking, was a fascinating insight into the life of an undercover game warden in the west. For his novels, he has drawn from his experiences but added drama, suspense and character development to create well-crafted and enjoyable reads. This, the second of his novels, continues the investigative adventures of the character, Charlie Cove, a sympathetic and complicated character. My enjoyment of the book was largely due to the skillfully use of suspense as the plot unfolded, so I won't describe it except to say that murder, dismemberment, drug trafficking, and poaching all add to its complexity and excitement. I loved reading this book during a day of cross country flights and airport layovers and had trouble putting it down even to board my plane. Again I can't wait for the next Charlie Cove adventure. Keep them coming Tony!
Tony Latham is an outstanding writer. Drawing on his experiences as an Idaho Fish and Game officer, he provides a wealth of background for a good story. Some comments have compared Mr. Latham to Tony Hillerman, and I agree. The only difference between thesis authors beyond location and events that I have found is that Hillerman' editors missed a few errors. Latham and/or his editors didn't. I found several instances early in the story where Mr. Latham includes dialogue in Spanish. For some readers that may create a problem. That dialogue is pertinent to the plot, but doesn't become clear until later in the story. The characters, in addition to the protagonist, Charlie Cove, are well defined, complex characters. The twist in the plot are well done and lead to a surprise conclusion.
