For fifty years the Human Alliance and the Krokator Star Empire have been locked in a cold war, neither side willing to return to the open conflict that raged for centuries. Though uneasy, the peace has been amicably maintained--until terrorist attacks against both powers, leaving the Alliance's capital shattered and the Emperor dead, threaten to reignite hostilities.
From the Alliance, the task of hunting down the perpetrators falls to intelligence officer Major John Gresham, whose background offers not only insight into galactic terror cells but also anonymous access to the labyrinthine defense establishment. The Empire sends Akgu Zurra, unquestioningly loyal and determined to hunt down those who murdered his sovereign. Their investigations lead in the same direction, forcing the two into unwelcome cooperation as they try to disrupt the network of their common enemy.
But that enemy, known only as the Forbidden Army, isn't just a well-organized group of malcontents from the alien slums - they enjoy resources that suggest their funding comes from connected insiders on both sides. Gresham and Zurra may distrust each other, but justice means exposing powerful figures as traitors and the attacks as part of a broader plot to destabilize the galactic order. If those traitors can't render the investigators ineffective, they'll settle for dead.
The Forbidden Army is the first book in The League of Planets Adventure.
The Forbidden Army The League of Planets Adventure Book 1 eBook Henrik Rohdin
The Forbidden Army (The League of Planets) by Hennk Rohdin is well written Sci-Fi but has a less than exciting plot and is slow moving at times. It involves a human and an alien partnered in a co-effort to determine who and why someone or some group is assassinating planetary alliance rulers. The romantic interest of the human character (along with just about everybody involved) is killed and the leading human investigator is seriously injured, so there is less than a happy ending. On the positive side, the characters are generally well-developed and the unraveling of the mystery is intricate but understandable.Product details

The Forbidden Army The League of Planets Adventure Book 1 eBook Henrik Rohdin Reviews
I give this book 3 stars, because the writing is much better than the writing you get usually in those free (or almost free) books and the plot is actually interesting and evolved. It reads like a good book. But then, it reads like a good book for accountants or lawyers. It's not the usual language for science fiction. Instead of reading about technologies and science, you read about legislation and bank accounts and just blaah.
Then, I have objections related to the world-building. The whole world is too human-like. I didn't find anything original, anything alien. It seems like the author took atheists and Muslims, put them on separate planets, one of which is obviously the USA, since English is Standard language for the planet and the whole Universe (and the multiverse, I expect?). And the president of the League is american, the elections are american-style and well, everything is american. What happened with the rest of the planet is a mystery to me. Probably died of boredom.
And yeah, those americans are very very racist! To the point of getting ridiculous - I mean why would the whole galaxy want to emigrate to the USA/the Earth/ so that they have to build ghettos? What is so attractive so that they will accept to live like prisoners (worst actually), how do they make a living, when they are practically not allowed anywhere (unless they are rich and/or criminals, who are always welcome anywhere) and how is our atmosphere compatible with all those different species anyway?
Finally, the way the alien is playing secondary role in this book is outright racist. I mean the guy is ultra-tough Empire assassin but he leaves to the human with distant military memories to do all the fighting and is generally either helpless or useless the whole time. Come on. That part of the story is like ancient US-Soviet movies, where two agents have to work together, but of course, the Soviet one is a complete idiot.
So even though I liked the writing and the story is interesting, there are things which I simply cannot forgive the author and so I won't buy the other books. Not my style and not my ethics.
I gave this novel five stars for the sheer quality of the story. The author thought the story through in every aspect; there are no loose ends. Character development, fascinating plot, variety of characters and detailed locations have created a incredibly well written story. Fast paced and fun read, well worth anyone's time!
HR has written an epic first novel of what appears to be an epic series. The first novel is well written. However, I found the storyline going in to many directions at once. I am a speed reader and that happens frequently. HR has written an in depth story of races at war because someone in weapons development is anxious to sell the next weapon. This is an excellent read for the genre. It needs to be read and you need to engage your brain or you will find yourself standing in the rain....ER
"The Forbidden Army" is a text that calls to mind, in its gritty settings, everything from "Blade Runner" to more recent cinematic versions of earth's encounters with aliens. The plot leaves a slight taste of Film Noir in my mouth since both main characters are pursuing intergalactic terrorists/criminals and they are doing so in the tried and true manner of detectives everywhere despite their military training. The fun here is in observing how well this witches brew of genres and sub genres manages to stand on its own, in a refreshing way that goes way beyond being merely derivative. A joy to read.
The characters are well defined, plotlines thoroughly carried through. Names and alien vocabulary was a bit annoying. (Typically this does not bother me, so it could be due to my reading environment at the time.) Book length was nice, giving room to develop the many twists involved. I doubt that it will have great longevity strictly due to the nature of the genre.
Each culture has some interesting wrinkles, the characterisation is not bad, with fast-paced plotting but action that is barely credible. . Sadly, the whole does not mesh - the lack of logic and motivation makes the suspension of disbelief very difficult. If you can manage it, you'll have a fun read.
I will have to say, after a slow start, it turned out to be a decent read. It is fill of odd-ball "alien" names and such, I suppose that is inevitable.
I would rather author consider this - if an alien is riding a (fill in an alphabet mix of odd noise here) like a horse...would it not make sense for Humans to call the creature a - -wait for it - a horse?
The story is very noir and sadly, treats dead (and mass death at that) in the same manner one might look at trimming a toenail. Several sub-plots? or memes perhaps are just too predictable -- global warming is killing Earth/humans are racists and politicians are crass fools (okay, maybe that isn't too far off target)/everyone will sell out first chance they get.
Bottom line, I found it to be worth the asking price. I can only hope the next in the series is better - or at least has a faster start.... So - 4 Stars and hoping the author will warm up the plot line and trim back on the memes.
